Virginia Town Aids Local Businesses Damaged by Tornado

On May 11, 2019, an EF-1 tornado ravaged sections of Suffolk, Virginia, a city located in the western section of the Hampton Roads metropolitan area which also includes the independent cities of Hampton, Chesapeake, Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth and Virginia Beach.

In addition to damaging a number of residential structures, the storm also damaged several local businesses. In response, the Suffolk Economic Development Authority has made façade improvement grants of up to $5,000 available to businesses impacted by the tornado. The grants allow active businesses in good standing with the city and impacted by the tornado to apply for money to replace or repair storefronts, signage or other exterior building damage. The deadline for receiving grant applications will be the end of August.
