Briarcliff Plaza, comprising a two-building complex located at the corner of Ponce de Leon and North Highland avenues in Atlanta was added to the Georgia register of historic places in February 2019. The shopping center was built in 1940 and it’s the first shopping center in Georgia to include dedicated off-street parking for customers.
In addition to the buildings being a rare example of Art Deco (Streamline Moderne) architecture, the plaza is distinguished by its substantial concentration of classic neon signage. This designation speaks to the significant role of signage in preserving an enduring sense of place for many American communities.
