The online powerhouse will open more than 12 grocery stores in the greater Los Angeles area, including some stores that might open as soon as the end of this year. The firm also has longer-range plans to open stores in San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago, Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia. The new stores will constitute a separately branded entity distinct from Amazon’s Whole Foods grocery chain.
