Founded in 1935, the restaurant chain had grown to 850 full-service restaurants in 15 states by 1988 when Hershey Foods sold it. During the past 30 years, however, the number of Friendly’s locations has declined to a current total of 200 locations, half of which are corporately owned and half that are operated by franchisees.
